Rain, Rain, GO AWAY!

It's been a long time since I updated, but I've been without internet for the past week or so.

In the process of moving to the house we're buying, Jason and I have had to temporarily "rent" the basement of a house that a couple of his friends are living in. It's a complicated thing. Our lease at the apartment is up as of tomorrow, and even though we're in the process of closing on the house, the actual close date isn't until May 13th. We had to rent a storage unit to store all our stuff, and we're having to rent a U-Haul and have two moving days within 2 weeks of each other, which totally sucks! Moving is stressful, ans so is buying a house, oh, and just in case you're wondering, there are a few forces of nature that you DON'T want to happen when you're trying to move.

1. Tornado - always a bad thing. Luckily, the tornadoes didn't actually head our way, but while we were packing up the apartment, the sirens did go off multiple times. The only time they set off the sirens is if there's been a tornado sighted on the ground in your county, or if the current weather conditions in your county are in the "making a tornado" stage, so a tornado could drop out of the clouds at any time.

2. Flash Flooding - We did all the big moving on Saturday with the help of one of Jason's friends, but there was still a lot of little stuff to move. Over the past week, we've been making a couple trips back and forth from the apartment to the storage unit. Well, on Sunday in addition to the tornado, we also had a lot of flash flooding. For those who don't know, Kansas is basically flat, so there's really nowhere for the rain to go, it just gathers in huge puddles in the street. It was raining like crazy, and we had just packed up Jason's car with stuff for the storage unit trip, we started driving and before we'd even gotten to the end of the street, the car was in a puddle of water at least 1 foot deep! Guess what, cars hate being submerged in water. In fact, they hate it so much, they'll shut off, and the check engine light will come on. Yeah, Jason's car shut off and we were stuck in a foot of water. He was able to get it going again, but it did some serious damage to the car. It didn't help that in our attempt to just get out of all the rain, and get the car somewhere dry, that no matter what street we turned down, every intersection was just as flooded.

In an attempt to help Jason navigate the depth of the puddles, I got out of the car, and was running around in the pouring rain, with water up to my knees! When we opened the car doors, water would rush in. It was cold, and we were frustrated, and tired from all the moving, and Jason was mad that his car had been damaged ... it was just a bad night.

We talked to his dad who is a mechanic, and he thought after it had all dried out the car would be fine, but it's not. We took his car the shop yesterday and it's still soaking wet inside. They have to rip out all the carpeting and floor boards so they can asses the damage before they know if anything has been ruined and needs to be replaced. It doesn't help that the entire week it's felt like we're living in Seattle. It's rained everyday, it's cloudy, no sun ... none of which helps dry out a car. All this, right before we're closing on the house. This is not the best time for us to be dishing out money left and right. Oh, and get this, we're changing our insurance on the cars, and we're meeting with our new insurance agent tomorrow. He asked us to bring the cars so he can look at them. What are we supposed to tell him? Uh, sorry, the car got damaged in the rain and it's being fixed right now ... still want to insure us?

It reminds me of the saying "Into our lives a little rain must fall" ... I just didn't expect it to literally mean rain would fall!
